Specifying a forward proxy server

A forward proxy is the most common form of a proxy and is generally used to pass requests out to the Internet through a firewall. You need to set up both your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) and the  applet to use proxies.

Note: Contact your system administrator to find out what type of proxy server your site uses. If your system administrator has not given you proxy settings, skip these steps.

To set up proxies in Internet Explorer

Note: It is essential to disable the cache when setting up the proxies to ensure the images you are viewing are current.

  1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  2. Select the Connections tab.
  3. Click LAN settings.
  4. Click Use Proxy server.
  5. Type the proxy server address in the Address field.
  6. Type the proxy server port in the Port field.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.

To set up proxies in Netscape Navigator

Note: It is essential to disable the cache when setting up the proxies to ensure the images you are viewing are current.

  1. From the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Select Proxies from the Advanced category.
  3. Choose Manual Proxy configuration.
  4. Click View.
  5. Type the proxy server address in the HTTP field.
  6. Type the proxy server port in the corresponding Port field.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click OK.
