What is ?

 is a web browser-based computer application that receives and displays DICOM images and reports.  is connected to a hospital network that also contains a  Server. With a valid URL or IP Address and user ID and password, you can use  to search the  Serverfor studies, from inside the hospital or from a remote location as long as you are connected to the network.

To break it down, modalities send DICOM images to a PACS or directly to the  Server. A component of the  Server, called the curator, converts the DICOM images to wavelet format. Using  you can search the local web cache or other servers for studies. The wavelet images are sent to  for viewing.

 is intended for reference viewing of medical data. It is not for the purposes of diagnosis. Images viewed from  are used for reference purposes only. Diagnostic reports created from diagnostic viewing applications and distributed through  can be used for treatment of a patient.

 is not intended as an archiving device. All images requested by  are stored in a local cache on your hard drive.

The advantages of using digital images and  include speed and flexibility. Rather than wait for the film to arrive, doctors, specialists, and technologists have immediate access to the image files and can conference with other doctors about the findings.
